Surge protection devices (SPD)

The use of modern sophisticated equipment, consumer electronics and control systems places high demands on their electromagnetic compatibility. Modern electronic control systems provided with very high integration level circuits, are becoming more and more sensitive to electromagnetic disturbance and overvoltage. This is one of the reasons why there is an increase of damage caused by overvoltage. The installation of surge protection devices according regulations NEN-EN-IEC62305 will reduce the damage to a minimum.

Lightning protection zones

The standard EN 62305-4 (EN 61312-3) defines lightning protection zones LPZ in view of the direct and indirect lightning effect (electromagnetic pulse - LEMP).
  • LPZ 0 A free area  (possibility of a direct lightning strike, non-attenuated LEMP)
  • LPZ 0 B: Lightning conductor receiver protection area (direct lightning strikeprotection, non-attenuated LEMP)
  • LPZ 1: inside a building (direct lightning strike is eliminated, attenuated LEMP - depending upon shielding)
  • LPZ 2: inside a room - e.g. server room with a conductive floor,
  • LPZ 3: inside a metal box (e.g. 19" rack)

Type 1 Lightning arresters

Recommended for use in the Lightning Protection Zones Concept at the boundaries of LPZ 0-1.
Type 1 lightning arresters are constructed as an encapsulated (multiple)spark gap for installation in main switchboards.
Type 1 Lightning arresters

Type 1+2 lightning and surge arresters

For installation in the main switchboard or substations. For use in the lightning protection zones concept at the boundaries of LPZ 0 - 1. For lightning current equipotential bonding and elimination of switching surges, in power supply systems entering the building.
Type 1+2 lightning and surge arresters

Type 2 Surge arresters

For installation in the secondary switchboard or into the control box. These surge arresters are for use in the Lightning Protection Zones Concept at the boundaries of LPZ 1-2 and are recommended for use in all kind of industry, residential and administration buildings.
Type 2 Surge arresters

Type 3 Surge arresters

For installation in sub-distribution boards or close to the equipment on order to further limit the overvoltage.
Recommended for use in the Lightning Protection Zones Concept at the boundaries of LPZ 2 - 3.
Type 3 Surge arresters
